I (Pastor Bo) stumbled across this series of two books (Octavia Butler died before she could finish what was intended to be a trilogy) in December 2023 and thought the young religion of Earthseed that is the subject of both books might be a great way to talk about (and perhaps to understand and appreciate more) Christianity. The founding tenet of Earthseed is “God is Change.” We might say “God is Love,” but how do we define this Love in light of our life experiences and decisions?

I’ve collected several resources below that might facilitate going deeper into this topic.

We’ll be meeting in person (in the Conference Room following supper in the fellowship hall at 5:30) and Zoom from 6-7 pm Wednesdays, February 14-March 20. Email Pastor Bo to register or to find out more.

Please don’t be put off by the length of these books. We will be using ideas and experiences from the books as launching pads for further conversation; we won’t be summarizing all of the content in book report fashion. While familiarity with the plot might enrich your contextual appreciation, you’ll be welcome to participate in the conversation whether you’ve read the books or not.

Warning: these books paint a graphic and sometimes violent picture of a dystopian America not too far into the future.
