What is Group Spiritual Direction?

Group spiritual direction offers a way of listening and reflecting on our everyday encounters with God in a community of trust. As we deepen our relationships with each other, we grow in our ability to help one another listen to the Spirit’s movement in our lives. Over time, these relationships transform who we are, how we relate with God, and how we understand our calling in the world. Rose Mary Doherty, a practitioner of Group Spiritual Direction from The Shalem Institute, defines three necessary traits in a person’s heart which contribute to the fruitfulness of the group: “Members must agree to:

  • commit themselves to an honest relationship with God
  • to participate wholeheartedly in the group process through prayerful listening and response
  • to open their spiritual journeys for consideration by others.”

I would add one trait to her list: the ability to spend time in silence with others, listening non-judgmentally to each other’s stories.
