Creativity and Spirituality (July 11-Sep. 5, 2021)

For the rest of the summer, we take some time to explore the richness of imagination and creativity in our spirituality: a feast for the senses. The Psalmist sings, "O taste and see that the Lord is good!" Our scriptures, spirituality, and practices are rich with sensory experience: the colors of liturgical seasons, smells of incense and candles, tastes of bread and juice (or pot luck suppers!), sounds of musical instruments, voices, and stories, and the touch of hands and the feel of a warm embrace (now that most of us are vaccinated!). Often, we limit what we think of as creativity in the church to music and preaching, or teaching, but creative gifts have no limits in life and in the church. We express and experience our spiritual journey in building and design, body movement and drama, story and song, gathering, preparing, and sharing food and drink, and communicating God's touch as we touch each other.

August 15 - Music (Psalm 150) Our primordial music of wind and wave, wailing and laughter weaves an aural tapestry of prayer and praise for God's gift of life.

August 29 - Pottery (Jeremiah 18:1-11) The malleability and brittle nature of worked and fired clay caution us as life and love shapes, hardens, and reworks us.

September 6 - Creation (Psalm 146) The promise of God's good creation is the very goodness of creativity God weaves into the fabric of our being.
