Of the many things that have changed dramatically in the last 18 months, perhaps none has changed so dramatically as our communal observance of communion. As pastors, we especially miss looking into each person's eyes and touching each other as we passed the bread and held the cup. Now, of course, we are not able even to be together in the way we once knew - and even when we are together (with masks), we use the little cups.
And at home, watching via livestream or the recording later, we might feel even more disconnected in a practice that used to bind us together in love.
And yet, communion itself - the last supper - celebrates God's love making all things new. And so it can be with our new practice of communion, especially in our homes. This first Sunday of the month, when we take time to celebrate communion, please gather your elements and share together with us in spirit as we celebrate a love and presence that trancends death itself, to say nothing of time and distance.
