- What questions do you have about how we use Bible passages to justify our actions and opinions?
- Why do differences in scriptural interpretation cause so much division among us?
- What does the use of the term “abomination” mean to you?
- How can we love our neighbor as we want to be loved? Who is our neighbor?
- Can we meet hate with love?
Let’s get together this summer to RECONCILE – to learn to restore harmony and resolve differences.
Our 9-week Reconciling Ministries Bible Study begins on Thursdays, starting June 23 through August 18 from 6:00-7:45pm. We will meet at Epworth in person and have a Zoom option for those who are not in the area.
What is the course about?
Historically, the gay community has lived through much discrimination, as we reviewed in our 3-week Study of the History of the Gay Movement that we offered in May. We had 23 attendees who learned so very much we never knew. Scott H. Strickler, J.D., a member of Epworth, has revised his Study Manual (now offered for the eighth time!) to include his further research.
The course is a study of the biblical passages and biblical principles that are most relevant in determining the position of the “Church” or the “Synagogue” with respect to the inclusion or exclusion of members of the gay community. It begins by analyzing the 7 biblical passages that are most frequently cited for exclusion. Then, we examine 5 biblical principles that support a policy of full and equal LGBTQ+ inclusion and participation.
Who can register for the course?
The classes are open to anyone who wishes to take it, regardless of membership or attendance at Epworth. Our target group is all people who are interested in understanding what the Bible has to say about the controversy within the “Church” and the “Synagogue” over the participation of LGBTQ people as full members of the Judeo-Christian religious community. Our past classes have had Catholics, Jews, Unitarians, Methodists and other protestant denominations. Each of the past 7 full class sessions have had 15-25 participants. You may even re-take the class! Invite others to the study, as well.
Who is teaching it?
The co-facilitators (not teachers) are Judy Moore (coordinator), Rev. Dr. Bo Gordy-Stith, Rev. Dr. Vicki Gordy-Stith, Rev. David Garrett, Rev. Bob Paulen, Denise Snyder and Scott H. Strickler.
